Asbestos Health check – How is your business doing?

The dangers of asbestos are well known, and employers and building managers have specific duties to fulfil in order to manage and adequately control the risk.

With thousands of people dying every year from asbestos related diseases, it is crucial that dutyholders meet their obligations to help prevent exposure to the potentially deadly fibres.

In order to help you identify whether you are legally compliant, you should be able to answer “yes” to all of the following questions:

 -          Do you regularly review your asbestos management system?  Has your Asbestos Management Policy and Asbestos Management plan been reviewed within the last 6 to 12 months?

-          Have all those in your organisation who have responsibilities for Asbestos Management received the necessary level of training?

-          Do you have effective procedures in place for providing information relating to Asbestos Containing Materials in your premises to those who undertake building maintenance work?

-          Have your building maintenance workers received the minimum of Asbestos Awareness Training?

-          Are all your contractors capable of recognising ACMs if they encounter them?

-          Should anyone be exposed to Asbestos in your premises, would your procedures for preventing such incidents stand up to scrutiny?

If you are an employer or building manager and answered “no” to any of the above questions, then you may need to think again about whether you are doing enough to stop people being exposed to asbestos fibres, and to comply with the law.
